Steamboat Willie entered the public domain on January 1, 2024. The original Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Peg Leg Pete from the 1928 cartoon are now copyright-free. This means that anyone can legally copy, reproduce, share, perform, reuse, repurpose, or sample the 1928 version of these characters. The copyright for digitizing these particular images does, however, belong to The Purple Hat.
